Anna Molka Ahmed

A passionate artist, professor, director and moving spirit behind the Fine Arts Department of the Punjab University Lahore, Anna Molka Ahmad was a driving force behind the first institution that was opened to the women artists in Pakistan. She studied painting, sculpture and design at St. Martin School of Arts, London. She converted to Islam at the age of 18 in 1935, before marrying Sheikh Ahmed, a would be Pakistani in October 1939. The couple moved to the Indian subcontinent in 1940-41 and settled in Lahore.
Her work is characterized by confidence, vigor and powerful coloring, and incorporates the use of drawing, painting, graphic arts, sculpture and design. She must have recognized that the destruction of our traditional culture by the British had created a vacuum which was hard to fill. She meant the best for Pakistan and promoted the national culture of the region. She did miniatures in her later years, when she was not able to go outdoors for painting. She was awarded Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, for her services in the field of fine arts education in the country.
